While Cowbella Dairy Products is a relatively young business, having started little over a year ago back in November 2010 (same month they got in touch with UPrinting!), its roots go seven generations back to 1817, when the first generation of Danforths to move to the Catskill Mountains started a dairy farm.  Fourth-generation George, who ran the dairy with son Russell until his passing in 2004, had a dream for the farm to stay in the family and continue into the future.  Shannon took over management of the farm in 2006 and she and her mother Gail started Cowbella in late 2010 to preserve their family’s legacy.

Shannon Mason, a 6th generation Danforth and General Manager for Cowbella Dairy Products (and a long-time UPrinting customer) explains. “We decided to start making butter and yogurt with our 100% Jersey milk as a value-added product line that we hope will bring our small 40 cow dairy to the next level in terms of profitability and sustainability.”

Cowbella is completely family-owned and operated- four generations of Danforths work together and are involved in every part of the farm’s operation, from production to marketing. The farm also avoids many of the practices large scale dairy farms are notorious for. Shannon explains “we use only natural, simple, and pure ingredients in our products. When possible, we always choose locally bought ingredients, and make seasonal flavors based on what is fresh and available from our neighbor farms.”

The Danforths take buying local, and taking care of their cows- very seriously “we use all of our own, and only our own cows’ milk” explains Shannon “Our cows live a great pasture grazed life- they are all named and known by us personally, and their health and happiness is our top priority.”

She emphasizes “our dairy products make both your stomach and your soul feel good.”

She continues “keeping our farm stabilized to pass on to our next generation is extremely important to us as we move into the future of a world of volatile milk markets where as a farmer shipping raw milk, you cannot rely on getting a fair price.”

When you run a business, it pays to invest in your image. UPrinting.com has been Cowbella’s supplier of custom labels since the beginning “Our name and logo have gone a long way in helping us promote and sell our butter and yogurt. Having a high quality label has been a wonderful advantage for us!” says Shannon.

Shannon continues “we have had many friends of the family tell us that they bought our products the first time because they loved our logo- then found out that it was our farm that makes it! It makes us feel good that people who know us are choosing to buy our products not only to support us, but because our products stand out on the shelves next to major brands.”

She adds “My 2 and 6 year olds love to go into stores that carry our products, find them on the shelves, and shout “Cowbella”!
