Eco-Friendly Paper Stocks: What they are and what printing companies should tell you
August 14, 2009
Printing companies can promise you eco-friendly paper stocks and “green” printing practices, but what does that really mean? Will you be getting vegetable based inks on 100% recycled paper stock, or glossy, chemical based inks on paper comprised of 1% recycled content?
Here at UPrinting, we want to make sure that you’re informed about your printing choices. So, like many printing companies, we provide a range of certified recycled or sustainable paper stocks. But, we also want you to know what those certifications really mean. Keep reading to find out:

Okay, But What Do Those Certifications Actually Mean?
That’s a good question. One we’re happy to answer.
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified
The FSC is an independent, non-profit NGO that certifies and accredits paper stocks that are harvested and produced responsibly and sustainably. A paper stock that’s FSC Certified and 10% Recycled (like our 100lb. Cover Gloss) means that its production, from tree planting to manufacturing, has been certified by the FSC as produced responsibly and includes 10% recycled content.
PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) Certified
The PEFC is the world’s largest forest certification organization and acts as a global umbrella for smaller, national certification systems. Like the other certification organizations, they certify products which use forest resources that are produced in an ecologically and socially responsible manner based on a certain set criteria. For PEFC-certified stock, try our 14pt. Cover Uncoated paper.
SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) Certified
Like the FSC, the SFI is a third-party auditing company that certifies wood paper products as having come from forests that are well-managed and sustainably maintained. They can also certify printing companies and paper suppliers. Our 13pt. Cover Uncoated Stock is labeled as SFI-certified and 30% recycled. That means you’re getting 30% recycled content and the SFI stamp of approval.
