Blooji LogoHere’s some good advice from Rachel Goettl of the design studio Blooji Designs in Harrison, Arkansas. : it’s always good to find a fresh perspective. She’s certainly one to follow her own advice.

As a self-taught designer who has been drawing since childhood and then branched out towards graphic design as she grew older, Rachel felt that she needed to update her skills. In order to expand her world view and extend herself beyond her comfort zone, Rachel went to Brisbane, Australia and worked her way to a college degree in the Commercial Arts Training College in 2008.

Her sojourn to Australia gave her a different slant on the design world that she believed she didn’t have before. This newfound perspective gave her the confidence to use bright and bold colors more freely, and can now be seen easily on her own portfolio website.

Rachel started Blooji Designs when she returned to the US with a renewed passion for design and a vision to start a company focused on great graphic design for any medium. It doesn’t matter if it’s for print or web applications, Rachel insists on creating something original that will resonate with people for a long time.

To come up with designs that are memorable as well as exciting (her tagline is: “Design doesn’t have to be boring”), Rachel gives her complete focus to one customer at a time. This allows her to dedicate time and resources in coming up with unique, and clean designs.

In fact, it is this commitment that makes Blooji Design valuable to Rachel’s long-standing clients. As a one-person operation, Blooji is able to provide relatively quick and dedicated services. Unlike with larger marketing firms, Blooji’s projects don’t have to get approval from a board of 12 creatives before it gets seen by the customer. It goes straight from Rachel to the client with no third-parties involved.

This direct conversation helps her understand what the project needs and also keeps clients apprised on the project stages which on average can take 2-3 weeks (for a mid-sized project).

Of course there are times when Rachel gets stuck on her design work, and when this happens, she takes her own advice by taking a break from the project. This usually entails going for walks, looking at design magazines for inspiration, or even doing something totally adventurous like white-water rafting.

Now it might not be clear at the onset how white-water rafting can inspire Rachel but according to her “I can almost always find some tiny bit of inspiration in nature because the world around us resonates with everyone.”

Once she regains inspiration, however, it’s not unusual to see Rachel churning out quirky and original designs especially considering how much she truly loves her job.

This is also why she believes that the success of Blooji is not based on a number on a checkbook (although it is a benefit, she admits). Rather, it is on seeing the joy on the face of a satisfied client and then having that client suggest Blooji to other people with design needs.

It’s interesting to note that Rachel has been able to land clients simply by the die-cut business cards she’s ordered from UPrinting. She relates “I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve heard clients tell me, “you had me at your business card!”. Once they caught sight of it, they weren’t turning back”.Blooji Business Cards

Aside from the die-cut cards, Rachel has also been “extremely satisfied” by the stickers and canvas prints UPrinting has produced for her. Over the past 8 years that she’s required printing services, she’s “found none that compare to the quality and service that UPrinting has given me in the short amount of time I’ve been with the company. I’ve told everyone I know to use UPrinting’s services before they go anywhere else.”
