As a huge music fan, I’m somewhat of a hoarder of old vinyl and CDs. I have a room in my apartment which is dedicated to my music collection, and I have no shame in saying that they are my prized possessions. But on the same token, I am not completely adverse to digital formats. Sure, you get a great sound quality a lot of the time, but one thing you don’t get with digital is the artwork.

For me, the artwork is often more prominent than the music itself. I’ll hold my hands up to buying music in the past purely because I loved the design on the sleeve. I’m sure I own a whole bunch of records that I’ve never even listened to, but the artwork caught my attention enough for me to buy it.

Today, so much music is only released digitally and the artwork can only be appreciated on the screen of your iPod or computer screen. It doesn’t have anywhere near the same impact on me that traditional, printed sleeves do. I need to touch and smell the print to truly appreciate the talent that has gone behind the design.

There have been some truly outstanding album covers over the years – too many to even think about, yet there are some that stood out in particular for me. When flicking through my vast collection of vinyl and CDs, as soon as I decide to look for these albums, all I have to do is skim through and the colours and design of the sleeve will jump out at me immediately. They are instantly recognisable.

I managed to whittle my favourite album covers of all time to just 19, and I’d like to share them with you in this post. Of course, this is an extremely personal selection, but I hope you appreciate them just as much as I do.
